Christianity Explained – Being Born Again.

What does it mean to be Born Again? Do I need to be Born Again? What does the Bible say about being Born Again? Is it possible to be a Christian and not be Born Again? This study will help answer these questions. It will provide Bible references, so you can read what they say for yourself.

For Christians helping new believers understand these things, I advise looking through the study together.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE BORN AGAIN

Jesus told Nicodemus (a Jewish leader) in John chapter 3 that he needed to be ‘born again’ if he wanted to enter into God’s kingdom. The birth Jesus was referring to was a spiritual birth. We can see from the chapter that the man was physically alive, but he was spiritually dead. In other words, moving from spiritual death to spiritual life requires a spiritual re birth.

THE PROBLEM

According to God’s Word ALL human beings come into this world separated from God and spiritually dead. Originally this was not the case. We were created to be in relationship with God daily. Spiritual death came when Adam (and Eve) rebelled against God. Genesis 2:7&17, 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

Adam’s disobedience corrupted and brought death to his whole being, spirit, soul and body. It also introduced death and corruption into the rest of the universe as well. On top of that, Adam’s sin nature was passed down to the next generation, who passed it down to the next and so on. 1 Corinthians 15:21&22

Everyone is now spiritually dead, separated from God and destined for Hell. All people everywhere are now sinners, and guilty before God. Romans 3:10&19. All people are spiritually dead and need to be made alive again to have any hope. Even nice moral people are dead spiritually and unacceptable to God. Isaiah 64:6 All of us are trapped in spiritual death because of sin. Human beings are unable to help themselves.

THE SOLUTION

Jesus is the solution to the sin problem!!!

We were powerless to solve the sin problem that separated us from God. So God did something to rescue us. He sent Jesus. Jesus came to earth, He lived a perfect life and died as a sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sin. His holy life, vicarious death and triumphant resurrection made the way for us to be reconciled to God. Now we can turn to God, be forgiven and receive a new life in friendship with Him. Romans 6:23, Acts 4:12, John 14:6, John 3: 5&6.

When we turn to Jesus in response to His call in the gospel, and exercise faith in His finished work on the cross, He removes our sins and makes us alive again spiritually. That is, we get born again. Only then can we have a relationship with God and live a life pleasing to Him. Ephesians 2:1, Ephesians 2: 8&9.

THIS IS THE PROCESS

• God the Son, Jesus, provides the sacrifice. 1 Peter 2:24
• God the Father sends His Word about this salvation from sin and separation. 1 Peter 1:23
• God the Holy Spirit breathes life back into our dead spirit Titus 3:5

THE RESULT

Born again believers are now alive to the things of God. Christians can now have a relationship with God. We have been changed inside. We begin to change from the inside out. This change occurs by the power of God’s Spirit and His Word. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Take note, a true and healthy disciple of Jesus becomes more like Jesus (in character) over time. God does the changing. We must submit to Him and His work in us. Philippians 1:6&11, Galatians 5:20, Titus 3:5, Psalms 23:3
